Monday January 23 is our first General Meeting of 2102. Join us at the Preston Ridge Campus of Collin College, 9700 Wade Blvd Frisco, Texas. The meeting is in Founders Hall, Room F230. This is the same building but a different room from our usual meeting place. Meet at 6:45, call to order at 7:00. As always there will be refreshments and time to socialize.

Program will include:

• Election of officers
• Plans for 2012
• Redistricting
• Texas Primary
• Voter ID bill

Remember it is time to update your membership! You can do so online. You’ll need to have a 2012 membership to vote on officers. You can also renew at the meeting via check.

If you have an old cell phone, bring it to the meeting to be recycled.

Hello BROADS (Book Readers of a Democratic Slant).

Just wanted to check in and remind you that our next discussion will be Thursday, 11/17. We’ll be discussing:

Screwed: The Undeclared War Against the Middle Class — And What We Can Do About It by Thom Hartmann

Let’s plan on meeting by 6:45 so we can start discussing the book by 7 pm.  REMEMBER . . . even if you haven’t read the book, you are more than welcome to come.  I don’t think one needs to read the book to know that there’s a war on the middle class.  Come for the fellowship – come to vent!

Diane Groves has once again opened her home to us.  Her address is 2508 Rosehill Ln., Plano. It’s near Park and Coit (sort of behind the library).

Please BYOB and feel free to bring a snack to share if you’d like.  Also, please bring book suggestions for our next read.

September’s meeting features Bobette Brasfield of Texas Conservation Alliance, which runs a program called Smarter Water for North Texas. She says, “The good news is that we have enough water in existing reservoirs to meet our water needs for the next 50 plus years! We can avoid new reservoirs which would destroy many thousands of acres of bottomland hardwood forest while uprooting families and harming existing local economies if we make the right allocation and use decisions.” Join us as we explore the low-impact water supply options that will allow us to avoid the monetary and human costs associated with unnecessary new reservoirs.

Bobette Brasfield is a native Texan from Grand Prairie. She is retired from Texas Instruments where she served as a Division Controller and Finance Manager. Bobette has a BA in Business Management and a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Science with a concentration in water issues from the University of North Texas. She has been an environmental educator for many years, working with the City of Coppell, Texas Master Naturalist Program, U.S. National Park service, Texins Dive Club and Dallas Audubon Society.

Native Texan and Democratic activist Rachel Farris (@MeanRachel) writes MeanRachel.com, a progressive blog that follows politics, the legislature and how they both are affected by social media. She covered the 2008 Democratic National Convention with The Texas Observer team and has spoken about social media and communications at the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs, Texas State University’s “Mass Communications Week,” and St. Edward’s University. She also writes for The Huffington Post and AlterNet.org, and currently serves on the board of Texas Democratic Women. She is also known for her work at the Austin-based PetRelocation.com, where she oversees operations and directs online communications strategies to create brand awareness and foster relationships with pet owners online.
