Monday January 23 is our first General Meeting of 2102. Join us at the Preston Ridge Campus of Collin College, 9700 Wade Blvd Frisco, Texas. The meeting is in Founders Hall, Room F230. This is the same building but a different room from our usual meeting place. Meet at 6:45, call to order at 7:00. As always there will be refreshments and time to socialize.

• Plans for 2012
• Redistricting
• Texas Primary
• Voter ID bill

Remember it is time to update your membership! You can do so online. You’ll need to have a 2012 membership to vote on officers. You can also renew at the meeting via check.

If you have an old cell phone, bring it to the meeting to be recycled.

September’s meeting features Bobette Brasfield of Texas Conservation Alliance, which runs a program called Smarter Water for North Texas. She says, “The good news is that we have enough water in existing reservoirs to meet our water needs for the next 50 plus years! We can avoid new reservoirs which would destroy many thousands of acres of bottomland hardwood forest while uprooting families and harming existing local economies if we make the right allocation and use decisions.” Join us as we explore the low-impact water supply options that will allow us to avoid the monetary and human costs associated with unnecessary new reservoirs.

Bobette Brasfield is a native Texan from Grand Prairie. She is retired from Texas Instruments where she served as a Division Controller and Finance Manager. Bobette has a BA in Business Management and a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Science with a concentration in water issues from the University of North Texas. She has been an environmental educator for many years, working with the City of Coppell, Texas Master Naturalist Program, U.S. National Park service, Texins Dive Club and Dallas Audubon Society.

The August meeting’s program topic is Issues in Women’s Health.  We will have two speakers: Dr. Kimberly Williams of Innovations Wellness Center will focus on preventive health care and what women should know and focus on; and Kelly Hart of Planned Parenthood of North Texas will explain how legislative issues and budget cuts have lowered the availability and access to such preventive measures.

This should be a very informative, passionate, and timely discussion on how women can protect themselves and their health.

Hello Book Readers of a Democratic Slant . . .

Hope you all are staying cool and enjoying our latest read, The Devil In Dover. I’m nearly finished with the book and I’m loving it. Of course, it’s also making me angry – which seems to be a constant state of mind for a Texas Democrat.

Our next get together will be Thursday, August 18, 7pm. Diane Groves was nice enough to open her home to us this time around.  Her address is 2508 Rosehill Lane in Plano – near the intersection of Park & Coit. I’ll send another reminder as we get closer to the date.

2012– You’ve seen what Texas Republicans have done to our state. If we lose 4 U.S. Senate seats, we lose a majority in Congress. That means  a possible end to Medicare, attacks on affordable healthcare, more big business tax cuts, continued erosion of women’s rights.  There will be open seats on the U.S. Supreme Court and it could turn totally conservative if we don’t have a senate majority. We can win in 2012 if we get busy now.  Organizing for America is in town. They are staffing the DPCC on Tuesdays and Thursdays and need help making phone calls. They’ve got the numbers, the scripts, the plan – you’d be calling Democrats. How about it? Can you spare some time each week? They are there afternoon through evening. The North Texas Asian Democrats will host an education forum on Monday, June 20, at 7:00 p.m.  “Crisis in Education –How will the Teas Legislation Affect your Family?” Speaker Tanya Tarr, Director of Legislative and Political Mobilization with the TX American Federation of Teachers. Plano City Council Runoff – Early Voting is on now and Election Day is Sat. June 18. There is a lot at stake in the decision between Pat Gallagher and Greg Myer. TDWCC doesn’t endorse candidates in nonpartisan races, but many of our members have an opinion if you would like to contact them.

TDWCC General Meetings are the 4th Monday of the month — June and July will be very informative –please join us.
Mon. June 27, in honor of Pride month, TDWCC will host a panel on LGBT issues moderated by Jeanne Rubin.
Panel will be:

o   Elizabeth Lopez, Board Member Equality Texas
o   Dawnetta Miller, Founder Collin County Gay & Lesbian Alliance
o   Lisa Thomas, President Stonewall Democrats of Tarrant County
o   Rosemarie Odom, Founder of Community Unity Respect Education (AIDS education and awareness).

We begin at 6:45 pm at Collin College – Frisco campus – there is a room change for this one meeting – same campus, the L Building, Rm L135. We will have signs up to lead you there.

Mon. July 25, our speaker will be Thomas Ratliff, State Board of Education. District 9. We will find out what’s going on with the SBOE and get his take on the state of education in Texas.   Note: Due to redistricting all seats will be up for re-election in Nov. 2012.

Educate Activate Elect

Monday June 27, 2011 is the next General Meeting of Texas Democratic Women of Collin County. Join us at 6:45pm at the Preston Ridge Campus of Collin College, 9700 Wade Blvd., Frisco, Building L- Room L135 – Please note room change.

In honor of Pride month, TDWCC will host a panel on LGBT issues featuring some of the leaders of the movement in North Texas.  Moderated by our own Jeanne Rubin, the panel will include:

• Lisa Thomas, President Stonewall Democrats Tarrant County

The speaker will be Dr. Richard Adams, a developmental-behavioral pediatrician. He will speak on the topic of children in Texas and their health and well-being.

Dr. Adams has researched and published widely on issues related to children with special needs. He has chaired the Committee on Children with Disabilities for the Texas Pediatric Society. In 2004, he was the recipient of the “Advocate of the Year” award from the Texas Chapter of the National Association for Nurse Practitioners, and he was recently selected to the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Children with Disabilities.
