Friend –

This week, the Senate may not reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.

Since this bipartisan legislation first passed in 1994, it’s been reauthorized twice without a hitch. And it’s been tremendously successful in helping to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

So it should be a no-brainer, right? Not to the Senate GOP, not in an election year, apparently.

Republicans are willing to throw away the entire law now that it helps protect lesbians, gay men, undocumented immigrants, and Native Americans. Do they believe acts of violence committed against these groups don’t matter as much?

The Senate’s voting on the Act any moment now, and we need to put pressure on the GOP to pass it.

Before the vote, stand with me for all victims of domestic violence — no matter who they are: Add your name in support of reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.

Since this law passed, it has helped reduce the annual rate of domestic violence by an astounding 53 percent. The rate of women killed by an intimate partner has dropped 34 percent.

Its programs, including violence prevention programs, shelters and rape crisis centers, and funding for the investigation and prosecution of violent crimes have made a world of difference in giving victims of violence a safe place to turn.

It has without a doubt saved thousands of lives.

And Senate Republicans are ready to roll back all our progress.

This year’s Act would make sure that LGBT Americans receive equal treatment for services, it would make it easier for undocumented immigrants to come forward as victims and provide temporary visas in certain cases, and let Native Americans on reservations go to tribal courts for abuse cases. With these additional protections, the GOP has promised to fight it every step of the way.

If Congress votes against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, all of these programs could grind to a halt, and the hundreds of thousands of women who rely on them will once again be left on their own.

Unfortunately, the GOP’s resistance is just another example of putting women’s health and well-being on the line in order to score a few cheap, political points with their base.

We can’t stand by and let them take away this critical legislation.

Before the Senate votes this week, add your name in support of protecting all victims of domestic and sexual violence, no matter who they are:

And keep an eye on when they do vote — because we’ll be keeping the pressure on.

Thanks for your help,

Debbie

Support. Innovate. Change

I hope you all were able to enjoy the company of fellow Democrats this past weekend at the Democratic County Convention and get excited about the Presidential Election! Don’t forget to attend the Democratic County Chair Candidate Debate on April 30th – not only will you have a chance to hear firsthand about our candidates’ plans for growing the Democratic party here in Collin County, but you will also have an opportunity to mingle with Democrats from other local clubs and organizations.

We are looking for volunteers to help host our orphan precincts – so if you want to make a real difference in turning out Democrats in 2012, email us at gotv@tdwcc.org for more information (details under volunteer opportunities).

Reminder: Collin County College Board of Trustees is seeking nominations to fill a vacated position for Place 9. If you or anyone you know is interested in making a difference in the community through elected office, this is an excellent opportunity. In addition to working with the District President to establish the vision for the college’s future, strategic direction, and its mission, the Trustees are also responsible for establishing college policies, providing rigorous fiscal oversight, and leadership for the college’s continued growth and success. Nominations must be received by April 30th, at 5pm. For more information, visit http://www.collin.edu/administration/boardCandidates.html

Events (please RSVP to gotv@tdwcc.org)

April 30, 7pm – County Chair Candidate Debate. This event is sponsored by TDWCC along with CCGLA, Drinking Liberally – Plano, Muslim Caucus – Collin County, the Texas Democratic Men’s Club, and the Allen Democrats. We will be in our regular location: Preston Ridge Campus of Collin College, 9700 Wade Blvd., Frisco, Founders Hall, Shawnee Room F148.

May 4, 7pm-Midnight – 2nd Annual Celebración del Cinco de Mayo presented by Collin County LULAC #4537. Don’t forget your TDWCC pushcards!

Volunteers Needed (email gotv@tdwcc.org for information)

Orphan Precinct Hosts. TDWCC is adopting a number of precincts without chairs (“orphans”) to turn out Democratic voters for the November elections. We are looking for two individuals to host an individual precinct – activities to include calling strong Democrats in the precinct about volunteer activities and Democratic events; host/organizing several house parties to make voter ID phone calls; and hosting a few precinct literature drops/blockwalks. The TDWCC GOTV committee will provide all phone/walk lists, scripts, and literature; publicize events; call for TDWCC volunteers and more.

College Outreach Coordinator. With two colleges in the area (Collin County Community College and UTD), TDWCC will be making an effort to find student volunteers to help with the 2012 Get Out the Vote effort. We are looking for one or two individuals to focus on volunteer recruitment from the colleges. Activities might include liaising with Democratic clubs, hosting/organizing a student event, and attending college events.

Voter Registration Drive Coordinator(s). We are looking for individuals interested in identifying some voter registration locations (Collin College, grocery stores, local festivals/events, etc.) and coordinating with the site for a registration table.
