County Convention

TDWCC had a booth at the DPCC Convention on March 20, 2010. Many interested persons came by to chat, some made donations for buttons (“Turn Texas Blue”) and books (Vote!), and many signed up to get emails. Several members were delegates and plan to attend the State Convention in June in Corpus Christi.

Judge Jim Jordan, who ran for Supreme Court Justice in 2008, spoke to the audience and praised TDWCC for all their support during his campaign. It was flattering to hear his kind words knowing who was listening! Judge Jordan did not win in 2008; he attended our Candidate Forum and we contributed to his campaign. He is now running for judge in his district and wants to come to one of our meetings to personally thank us for all our support. He’s a candidate we will want to keep an eye on!

Bust a Monopoly challenge

Texas Senator Kirk Watson has set up a “Want to Bust a Monopoly” challenge. He is looking to support candidates who want to break the monopoly that powerful special interests have on our state’s government, and Rep. Carol Kent is one of the candidates. If she gets the most votes, she gets a $10,000 contribution from Senator Watson. This is a great way to “vote” for Carol since she is not on our ballot but has been a great supporter of TDW.

Health care reform phone bank opportunity

The Democratic Party of Collin County, in cooperation with Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee, will be hosting a “Final Push” phone bank  to provide support to President Obama’s Health Insurance Reform Legislation coming up for a vote in Congress in the coming days.

The President has delayed his trip to Asia to help get this passed, and he needs our help — as do of course the millions of Americans whose lives will be improved by this monumental legislation.

There will be some phone lines available, but please bring your cell phone if you have one.

March Fundraiser Wrap-up

On March 6th, the TDWCC commenced its 2010 fundraising social season with its first ever evening-at-the-theater.  114 TDWCC guests saw the Rover Dramawerks production of Mark Twain’s A Murder, A Mystery and A Marriage at the Courtyard Theatre in downtown Plano. Performed as a Bluegrass musical, the comedy-melodrama, true to its genre, solicited audience participation. Yes!  The villain got his share of boos and hisses. The play’s narrative intentionally left some questions unanswered, so theater patrons could seek one another’s insights during the post-performance reception. The spacious, winding lobby of the Courtyard was the ideal setting for drinks, hors d’oeuvres and lively conversation. TDWCC guests mingled with each other, cast members, and Rover Dramawerks theater-goers.

TDWCC was delighted to sponsor an entertainment event that demonstrated off-off-off-off Broadway is alive and well in the historic district of downtown Plano.

Thanks to all of you who supported this successful fundraiser. We had a wonderful turnout.  Our thanks to Rover Dramawerks for their generosity in supporting our effort.

Volunteers needed for the County Convention

The DPCC County Convention is Sat. March 20 at Plano Centre, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Check out www.collindems.us for more details.

TDWCC is going to have a booth there and we need volunteers to staff it. Let us know if you can work a shift (1 hour – 4 hours – up to you).  Send email to President Barb Walters.

PPNT PAC Reception

The political arm of Planned Parenthood of North Texas, PPNT PAC, is working to get pro-choice Texans to the polls in record numbers. They want to make sure voters have the truth about the candidates’ positions regarding reproductive health care.   You are invited to attend a PPNT PAC Reception on Tues., March 23, 6-8 p.m. at the home of Tricia Miller, 3618 Harvard Ave, Dallas, TX  75205.  The guest speaker will be former Iowa First Lady Christie Vilsack, Executive Director of The Iowa Initiative, which works to reduce the high rate of unintended pregnancies.
