TDW State Convention II

Organizing by Tanya Tarr, Director, Legislative and Political Mobilization at Texas AFT.

Tanya Tarr spoke about grassroots organizing via retail politics, social events, and social networking.  She emphasized the importance of maintaining lists of contacts so you have a place to start when you’re ready to find volunteers and money for the next campaign you’re supporting.  Don’t be afraid to ask for money, and once someone gives you money, don’t be afraid to tap that person as a volunteer.  When someone gives you money, it’s a show of interest.  We as women have great power as messengers.  Let’s use it!

Slides of her presentation can be found at SlideShare.

TDWCC continued its mission to educate with an informative program from “green Realtor” Bob McCranie. Using his own home as an example, Bob explained the steps he took to reduce his energy usage by 40%. Beginning with an energy audit to identify areas of waste, he outlined numerous ways to go green, save cash and decrease energy consumption. From major purchases such as new HVAC systems and fuel efficient cars to smaller endeavors including collecting rainwater, composting and replacing light bulbs, Bob was able to chart your potential savings. To learn more about being energy conscious, check out the City of Plano’s Live Green Expo being held on April 17th from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Plano Centre. Bob will be an exhibitor at this annual event along with many other experts in the field of sustainable living.

Run for your local school board

School Board races are a good place to start a political career and there are several opportunities in Collin County. There are three openings to be filled on the Collin College Board of Trustees. Up for re-election are Cindy Bauge, David Hammell and E.T. Boone. There are no term limits for the nine Board members and two members have served continuously since the college’s founding 25 years ago. These are non-partisan races that will be elected in the spring. Filing will begin soon, so be thinking about potential candidates.
